Here we are, November 21st and we are just hearing the first of the Buff-breasted Paradise Kingfisher close to town in Daintree.
There are a dozen or so birds at the end of Stewart Creek Rd and excavation of some termite mound nest sites has began. Extremely dry here, so conditions are difficult for them.
Our regular ‘Kingfisher watcher’ Fred Forsell has been observing the birds for hours each day for the past two weeks and it seems that until the last day or so they are shy, quiet, high and easily spooked. Many birders have missed them. Hopefully they are settling down now. What we really need is some rain to soften up the termite mounds and let them begin their nesting season in earnest.
