Red Mill House offers the opportunity to base yourself for a few days in a comfortable, quiet and friendly environment set amongst beautiful tropical gardens. Suggested Itinerary - For the Birdwatcher

Day 1

  • Arrive at Red Mill House mid-afternoon from Cairns.
  • Late afternoon walk around the varied habitats of Daintree Village and to the Daintree River. Urban, riverine and farmland environments.
  • Overnight at Red Mill House.

Day 2

  • Early morning specialist birdwatching river cruise on the Daintree River. Specials include Great-billed Heron, Little Kingfisher and Papuan Frogmouth.
  • Birding the local Daintree Valley - rainforest, creeks, farmland, wetlands and more. Local 'mudmaps' and birdlist provided to Red Mill House guests
  • Late afternoon guided birdwatching walk.
  • Overnight at Red Mill House

Day 3

  • An early start for a day in the Daintree National Park/Cape Tribulation area exploring the rainforest and looking for rainforest specialities including Southern Cassowary, Spotted Catbird and Victoria's Riflebird. Comprehensive guide and maps available at Red Mill House.
  • Return in time for a late afternoon river cruise, or walk along Stewart Creek Rd.
  • Overnight at Red Mill House

Day 4

  • A pre-breakfast walk and then depart for Julatten or the Atherton Tablelands or back to Cairns, to continue discovering the birds of the region.

Suggested Itinerary - For the Nature Lover

Day 1

  • Arrive at Red Mill House mid-afternoon
  • Wander around the garden and learn about the variety and history of the garden, or enjoy the swimming pool.
  • Perhaps a late afternoon or evening cruise on the Daintree River
  • Overnight at Red Mill House

Day 2

  • Buy a packed lunch, take a map and enjoy a self-guided walk through local farmland and rainforest into the Daintree National Park, finishing at beautiful Naiu Falls and natural swimming hole.
  • A cruise on the Daintree River from the local jetty.
  • A 2 hour late afternoon guided walk along Stewart Creek Rd, following the river and looking at plant life and wildlife along the way.
  • Overnight at Red Mill House.

Day 3

  • A full day visiting the Daintree National Park and Cape Tribulation, taking in the well-signed boardwalks, beaches and Daintree Discovery Centre. Comprehensive guide and maps available at Red Mill House. Private walking trails also available, and Guided Rainforest Tours.
  • Overnight at Red Mill House

Day 4

  • Either move on within the region or stay, considering some of the other local options. Argo 8x8 rainforest tours, horse riding on the beach, sea kayaking, cycling, Mossman Gorge and the local indigenous Kuku Yalangi tour are very worthwhile. The Great Barrier Reef is accessed from Port Douglas, and can be a great day-trip from Daintree.
